In the hopes of “containing” communism in Southeast Asia, Johnson entered America in the War in Vietnam. Predicting imminent victory, Johnson vastly underestimated both the nature of the war and the determination of the guerilla forces, and was unable to convince the American people that this war was a fight in the defense of their direct interests. By the time America withdrew from engagement, over 58,000 U.S. soldiers had been killed.
