John Tyler
1841-1845
The vice president of William Henry Harrison, John Tyler was the first to enter office due to the death of an active president. While this automatic replacement is lawful tradition now, Tyler's assumption of power was quite a source of contention at the time. Shortly after taking office, Tyler added to this controversy by separating himself from his party and refusing to support majority legislation coming from either side. Although confident in his strict adherence to the Constitution and belief in state's rights, he was unable to convince anyone else of these beliefs and was easily defeated in the next election.
