Martin Van Buren
1837-1841
Missouri issued an executive order on October 27, 1838, known as the “Extermination Order,” authorizing troops to drive Mormons out of the state by force because of their political threat. An outspoken proponent of liberty, Van Buren denied these citizens the rights to have theirs, simply because of the political consequences of doing so.
